ProFractional

ProFractional is Sciton’s solution for achieving excellent resurfacing results. Unlike full field resurfacing which removes the entire surface area of a treatment site, ProFractional ablates narrow-diameter channels into the skin, covering a fraction of the total treatment area. This action initiates the body’s wound healing response, while leaving the surrounding tissue intact for rapid healing. The benefits of ProFractional include increased patient comfort, shorter healing times, and tunable results that can range from subtle to dramatic.

ProFractional utilizes a 250 µm spot size and offers a range of treatment densities from 1.5-30 percent coverage. ProFractional-XC utilizes a 430 µm spot size and predefined treatment densities for greater speed. ProFractional-XC also provides the ability to add depth-selectable tissue coagulation for enhanced collagen remodeling.

Clinical Applications

ProFractional creates clean, micro-ablated channels in the skin, which activate fibroblast production. The result is increased turgor and thickness to the skin. Leaving surrounding tissue intact helps promote rapid healing due to presence of stem cells and melanocytes in the papillary dermis.

ProFractional can be used on all skin types, both on face and body.

Science + Technology

Better ablation through more efficient water absorption

ProFractional utilizes an erbium: YAG laser, which was chosen due to its high ablation efficiency. Erbium has a much higher absorption in the target chromophore water than CO2 (see graph below) which gives erbium the ability to vaporize tissue with very little thermal conduction. By contrast, due to their comparatively low absorption by water, CO2 lasers have lower ablation efficiency and therefore, unavoidably, conduct a significant amount of heat into the tissue.

ProFractional

The ProFractional treatment by Sciton resurfaces the skin. It creates narrow diameter channels in the skin, stimulating the surrounding areas. This process stimulates collagen production, leading to younger looking, refreshed skin.

Consultation

During your consultation, one of our licensed estheticians or practitioners will examine your skin and help you determine the best treatment plan. You will discuss potential risks and the benefits of ProFractional.

Considerations

Candidates for ProFractional treatment may have the following

  • General good health
  • Realistic expectations
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Rough skin texture
  • Scarring
  • Loose Skin
  • Any skin type

Preparation Before the Procedure

Avoid indoor or outdoor tanning for four weeks prior to laser treatments. Also avoid sunless tanning products for a month prior to treatment. Avoid products with retinoid or acids for a week before your procedure. Patients who are prone to cold sores or fever blisters may need to take Valtrex before treatment.

Procedure

An anesthetic is typically applied to the treatment area prior to the procedure. ProFractional laser treatment creates thousands of microscopic wounds surrounded by areas of healthy skin. These tiny wounds stimulate collagen production, diminishing the appearance of scars and wrinkles.

Recovery

Redness, swelling and warmth, similar to a sunburn, is a normal response to ProFractional resurfacing. This discomfort may last up to eight hours. You may use cool compresses and acetaminophen to help relieve the pain. Keep the skin moist with Aquaphor or Vaseline for the first three days. Avoid aerobic exercise and saunas for the first three days. Avoid use of skincare products containing retinol or acids for one week.

Results

ProFractional surfacing typically requires several treatment sessions to obtain desired results. Patients report younger looking skin and a decrease in wrinkles and scarring.
